Carolina Hurricanes Signings, Prospects and a Tweet

This week the Carolina Hurricanes locked up a key forward, signed a defensive legacy and trended on Twitter. Team Cardiac Cane brought you all of that, and some Canes Prospect Profiles.

The news this week was centered around the Hurricanes future, and what the Caniacs can look forward to from General Manager Ron Francis and his management team. The Canes own communications folks were busy with player stories and Twitter (in a couple ways).

We here at Team Cardiac Cane were busy analyzing and reporting on some of the exciting prospects in the Hurricanes pipeline, as well as reviewing the 2015-2016 season and announcing the Cardiac Cane Carolina Hurricane Player of the Year.

The CC Player of the Year a very prestigious award, and we expect to get a call from NHL headquarters any day now, and to soon have our own Keeper of the Cup like Lord Stanley does.

  • Rising to the Challenge – ‘Jaccob Slavin made an impact on the Canes’ blue line with a breakout rookie year.’
Colleen Hamilton wrote a great piece about Jaccob Slavin for the team’s news page. In it she reviews Slavin’s tremendous play this season, and gets some really good quotes from the headline grabbing rookie.
  • Tweetmail No. 103 – ‘Moments, Free Agency & Schedule’
One of our favorite Canes tweeters, Michael Smith, answered Caniac questions in his very popular ‘Tweetmail’ series, where he gets fans to submit questions via the Hurricanes Twitter feed.
  • Hurricanes Agree to Terms with Jake Chelios – Checkers defenseman gets a one-year, two-way contract
Ron Francis announced on Friday that the Hurricanes had come to an agreement with the son of Hockey Hall of Fame member Chris Chelios, who finished second in scoring by defensemen and first in games played this season.

Carolina Hurricanes Sign Nordstrom to New Contract
General Manager Francis also announced Friday that the club had come to terms with forward Joakim Nordstrom on a two-year contract extension, paying him $1.25 million next season and $1.3 million the next.

According to the release from the Hurricanes, General Manager Ron Francis said, “Joakim took a major step forward in his career last season. We expect him to continue to grow as both a player and a leader on our team.”

Nordstrom himself took to Twitter to add his expression of excitement to the flood from the rest of Caniac Nation.

Cardiac Cane Post-season Prospect Profiles

This week the Cardiac Cane writers began our Carolina Hurricanes Post-season Prospect Profiles series (sorry, we like alliteration). We decided to start from the goal line out, with a very promising goalie and two rising defensemen as the first three.

Alex Nedeljkovic – 37th Overall 2014 Draft – Goaltender, Niagara Ice Dogs (OHL)
“He missed last year’s development camp, but this year he will be a large presence. Because of his age Nedeljkovic will be turning pro next year regardless of his performance, so the question is will he play with the Hurricanes, Checkers or Everblades?”

Haydn Fleury – 7th Overall 2014 Draft – Defenseman, Red Deer Rebels (WHL)
“Fleury was a high profile pick when he went top ten in the 2014 NHL entry draft. Unlike many other young Canes defensemen he took the traditional route and stayed in the juniors to continue to develop and become better at his craft. In recent years he has shown great promise and development and is ready for professional play.”

Roland McKeown – Acquired from LA Kings – Defenseman, Kingston Frontenacs (OHL)
“Roland McKeown may not be a familiar name to Carolina Hurricanes faithful. He was part of the trade that sent Andrej Sekera to the Los Angeles Kings. He is someone that should be on everyone’s radar because he’s one of the top defensive prospects in the Carolina Hurricanes organization.”

Next up in our Prospect Profile series will be Sebastian Aho, Anthony Camara, Aleksi Saarela, and Andrew Poturalski.

Carolina Hurricanes: A Look Back at the 2015-2016 Season
“The Canes are on the outside looking in, but for the first time in what feels like a decade (because it is) there is wild optimism in the Triangle. After years of promises that the end is near, that there is a dawn coming, Caniac Nation can finally start to see some light peaking over the horizon.”

Young Tweeter Learns a Lesson

The signing of Joakim Nordstrom was welcomed with open arms by pretty much every Carolina Hurricane fan on social media. Both Twitter and Facebook had posting after posting praising Ron Francis for making the deal.

One young man who decided to tweet his displeasure with the signing, either honestly believing Nordstrom isn’t that good or just trying to get some attention, learned very quickly that the wrath of a fanbase can be overwhelming.

The Hurricanes response to his tweet, and subsequent postings from around the sports world, made for a very uncomfortable Friday afternoon for him.

In fact the whole incident made it on to DeadSpin.com, where the title of the article is definitely in the running for Best Headline of the Year.

And here is the Twitter conversation that started the whole thing:

The young man who posted the unfortunate tweet had closed his account before Friday evening had begun.
