NHL Trade Rumors: Carolina Hurricanes GM Ron Francis Talks about Andrej Sekera, Cam Ward, Jiri Tlusty, and the State of the Canes

On Friday, Carolina Hurricanes General Manager Ron Francis talked to local media about various trade rumors, contract extension discussions, and what the team will do in the near future.

Francis said, obviously, that the team’s record is not where they want it to be. The Carolina Hurricanes are 13-24-4 as of January 10. He did also add that good strides were made in the first half of the season.

Getting to the talk of trades and personnel, he said that decisions on players may be made at upcoming management meetings, noting that frustration and emotions need to be taken out of the equation.

Cam Ward has been involved in trade rumors lately. Francis declined to speak directly about Ward, but he did say that many teams are looking for goalie help.

Francis said that the team has to be careful with Ward, who has a no trade clause. He noted that he free agent market does not look promising for goalies.

Finally, contract extension talks with Jiri Tlusty and Andrej Sekera have been ongoing, but have been put on the back-burner for now, but talks should pick up once again pretty soon.

Both Tlusty and Sekera are on track to be unrestricted free agent this summer. If a deal can not be reached with the players before the March 2 trade deadline, it is expected that they will be traded.

The Carolina Hurricanes are going to have to make big decisions soon. It will be interesting what rookie GM Ron Francis does as we near the trade deadline.
