Icing on the Cake: Tim Gleason

AUTHOR: | IN: Hurricanes | COMMENTS: None Yet

Carolina Hurricanes’ birthday boy, Tim Gleason, was born on this day in 1983 in Clawson, Michigan. Gleason has an “A” stitched to his sweater and another embedded on his heart. He isn’t one of those charismatic players that smiles often or goofs around at practice, but it doesn’t mean he isn’t a passionate, key player to his organization. The quiet leader is a feisty blueliner that was once quoted as saying his teeth would be grounded to dust if not for the protection of his mouth guard. The quick-tempered Irishman may be known for dropping the gloves, but I wouldn’t label him [...]

The Next Face of the NHL?

AUTHOR: | IN: Hurricanes | COMMENTS: 9 Comments

Tuesday the hockey world learned that Washington’s captain and superstar Alexander Ovechkin would not be attending the All-Star Game or its associated festivities. In what I viewed as nothing more than a temper-tantrum, Ovi claimed that he should not be there because he is currently suspended. Like the rest of the world, I took to the Twitter to express my thoughts. @Esbee92 I swear this is my last tweet about Ovi. If you want to be the face of the NHL you have to actually BE THE FACE OF THE NHL. This tiny tweet generated a really great conversation with [...]

Canes Face Jets & Curse Of The Crease

AUTHOR: | IN: Hurricanes | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Winnipeg Jets  are in Raleigh and looking to defeat the Canes for a fourth consecutive loss, whereas Carolina is aiming for their third straight home victory. Carolina has gone 7-2-1 over 10 games played at the RBC Center. These Eastern Conference teams are 7 points apart in the standings. Jets are in 10th place with 50 points while Canes are playing the caboose with 43 marks. Last season the Hurricanes went 5-0-1 against then Thrashers’ team. No doubt, we are due for a victory this year. When it comes to goaltending against Winnipeg, it is the Curse of the [...]

Thursday Thoughts: Trading Players, Blows and Dance Moves

AUTHOR: | IN: Hurricanes | COMMENTS: 8 Comments

It’s been a week of hard work for the lunch pail men of the mighty Carolina Hurricanes. While it may not show completely in the box scores or divisional standings, the team has made lots of good forward progress. Here are some current happenings and some of my thoughts for the week: Trading Places:  First up, we bring you news of a trade. Wednesday evening, the Carolina Hurricanes announced Jon Matsumoto and Mattias Lindstrom of the Charlotte Checkers were traded to the Florida Panther’s organization. In return, the Hurricanes picked up Evgenii Dadonov (Chuck Kaiton will have fun with that [...]

Canes Lose Another Close One (Pens – 2, Canes – 1, SO)

AUTHOR: | IN: Hurricanes | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

The Carolina Hurricanes lost their second close game in a row, this time to the Pittsburgh Penguins at the CONSOL Energy Center. Both Cam Ward and Marc Andre Fleury were on all night and both goaltenders made spectacular save after spectacular save. As always the case against the Pens, the Canes got peppered with shots early and often. The Penguins outshot the Canes in every period, including overtime, ending up with a significant edge in shots on goal with 41 to the Canes 26. Jamie McBain started the scoring off early wristing a lose puck past Fleury just 2:11 into [...]

Flyers Squeak By Canes (Flyers-2, Canes-1)

AUTHOR: | IN: Hurricanes | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

The Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers battled last night in a close-checking, defensive battle, where the Flyers were able to sneak away with a 2-1 victory at the RBC Center. The Canes battled hard all night, a polar opposite of the game in Nashville on Saturday night. Chad LaRose did not play due to an injury sustained in practice on Monday, so the team called up Jerome Samson, the second-leading scorer for the Charlotte Checkers. Samson played like he wanted to stay, as he recorded the only goal for the Canes on the power play, was even, had 5 shots [...]

Carolina Hurricanes Annual Check-Up

AUTHOR: | IN: Hurricanes | COMMENTS: None Yet

Canes’ players and staff need to collectively turn and cough for this mid way check-up. The first three months have not been pleasant for Carolina, both physically and mentally. The southeast division team is currently 12-20-6. Let’s start with the physical exam:   Jeff Skinner is on the injured reserve list. Skinner has been out since December 8, 2011 with a concussion. The open ice hit that jarred the Canes’ star was delivered by a virus known as Andy Sutton. Drayson Bowman was recalled December 11th to fill Skinner’s skates. Bowman has two goals in nine goals with a plus/minus [...]

Pens Pull Away in Third Period – Pens 4, Canes 2

AUTHOR: | IN: Hurricanes | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Pittsburgh Penguins peppered Justin Peters with 52 shots on goal last night, and pulled away with 3 goals in the third period to beat the Carolina Hurricanes in the Pens’ first game since the Christmas break. The Canes started off in the first period with a beautiful pinch at the blue line by Tim Gleason, who made a nice pass to Tim Brent, who tipped it in past Marc Andre Fleury to give the Canes a 1-0 lead at 10:23, which is how the two teams entered the first intermission.
