The Carolina Hurricanes don’t have pleasant memories of Czech defenseman Tomas Kaberle.
After being signed to a three-year deal by the Canes in the summer of 2011, Tomas Kaberle was traded to the Montreal Canadiens just 29 games into his 2011-2012 campaign. He tallied just 9 points with the Hurricanes and was a -12.
Three years later, the 36-year-old blue liner is a free agent, and he is not ready to give up on his NHL career, even though he did not play in the 2013-2014 season . No contracts are on the table for Kaberle, but a tryout could be a real possibility.
“It’s not in Ontario,” Kaberle said Monday at the BioSteel Pro Hockey Camp at St. Michael’s College. “I’m planning to stay around here if possible, so we’ll see what’s going to happen in the next few weeks.”
Tomas Kaberle’s NHL career has been an impressive one. A veteran of 984 NHL regular season games, Tomas Kaberle has made a big impact on the league. He tallied 563 points in those games.
In 102 NHL playoff games, Tomas Kaberle has tallied 39 points.
Tomas Kaberle’s best point producing season in the NHL came in the 2005-2006 season where he posted 67 points in 82 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He finished 13th in Norris Trophy voting that year.
We’ve likely already seen the best of Tomas Kaberle, but he could make a good, cheap veteran addition to a team in need of an offensive defenseman.
