NHL Free Agent Rumors: Dany Heatley in Talks with Hurricanes, Jets, and Devils

The Carolina Hurricanes have already made many small signings, but there may be potential for a bigger signing ahead.

Per Eklund of, the Carolina Hurricanes are one of three teams currently discussing the idea of a one-year deal with Dany Heatley.

The 33-year-old winger is drawing interest from the Winnipeg Jets and New Jersey Devils along with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Dany Heatley is four seasons removed from a 39 goal campaign in the 2009-2010 season with the San Jose Sharks. His last 20+ goal season was in the 2011-2012 season with the Minnesota Wild.

The two-time 100+ point producer is coming off his worst point producing season since he entered the league in 2001. The Freiburg, Germany native has tallied 791 points in 863 NHL regular season games in his 12-season NHL career.

Dany Heatley will look to go back to his old, goal scoring self next season with whatever team his is with. He can turn into a very high value player if he can get back to being a 20+ goal scorer.

The three-time Olympian is apparently mulling over his options on one-year deals. Dany Heatley could be a top-six forward with the Carolina Hurricanes next season if he can return to form.

Dany Heatley could thrive in the right situation. At one point, he was an absolutely incredible goal scorer.

Pretty risky. I hope Winnipeg doesn’t take him. They need to play a really strong defensive system this year and while Heatley still has the potential to score some goals, I don’t know if he’d be the right player for them. He may be useful on the powerplay, which I expect Maurice to completely re-tool this season, so if he can be somewhat reliable and make smart plays on the 3rd line and then play some on the PP, he could have a positive influence.

Heatley won’t become a jet for a few obvious reasons.. one its Atlanta relocated and he is pretty much over his love affair with teams north of the border. The devils aren’t gonna get him either because he becomes Kovy’s sloppy seconds. The Canes probably have the best shot, because of his former GM being Don Waddell and the fact Dany played well in that building. My gut still says he signs a one year deal to be reunited with Spezza in Dallas.

Where would they put Heatley? On a potential line with Jordan and Dwyer? I don’t understand what they could do with Heatley. This is not a signing I’d be too thrilled about.
