NHL Free Agency: Carolina Hurricanes Sign Jay McClement

Ron Francis, General Manager and Executive Vice President of the Carolina Hurricanes, has announced that the team has sign 31-year-old center Jay McClement to a one-year deal worth $1 million.

Here is what Ron Francis said about Jay McClement today after signing him on Wednesday:

“Jay is a veteran centerman who is proficient in the faceoff circle. He’ll also provide elements of consistency and leadership for our club.”

Jay McClement played in 81 games last season for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He scored just 10 points (4 goals, 6 assists) in those games, but the 6’1″ forward is best known for his faceoffs and his defensive reliability.

The Kingston, Ontario native is a veteran of 682 NHL regular season games and 11 NHL playoff games. Jay McClement has tallied 204 regular season points throughout his 9 season NHL career.

Jay McClement had a faceoff percentage of 53.7 percent last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He took over 1,200 draws. Jay McClement was also a common fixture on the Leafs’ penalty kill, and he has been for the past few seasons.

The St. Louis Blues drafted Jay McClement with the 57th overall pick (2nd round) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Prior to playing with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2012-2014, Jay McClement was a member of the Colorado Avalanche, the St. Louis Blues, and the St. Louis Blues’ farm system.

Jay McClement notched a career-high 12 goals in the 2008-2009 season with the St. Louis Blues. Jay McClement’s career high in points is 36, which came in his second season in the NHL and with the St. Louis Blues.
