Eric Staal’s name has been thrown around in trade rumors and scenarios a lot since the end of the regular season, and that likely won’t end anytime soon.
On TSN’s Insider Trading on Wednesday night, Darren Dreger mentioned that the Edmonton Oilers are actively pursuing a centerman and that the 3rd pick in the draft was definitely available along with Sam Gagner, who is usually available.
Eric Staal could be a perfect fit for the Edmonton Oilers, and the Carolina Hurricanes could get a lot out of it. The Edmonton Oilers are trying to find a center who can play in the top six and help their offense and consistency. Eric Staal could be a guy that could instantly be put on the top line with a player like Taylor Hall.
How likely is a trade like this? Probably not likely, but when you think about what both sides need, it makes sense. That Carolina Hurricanes could get a top-three pick in the NHL Draft, and they can select a player like Sam Reinhart or Sam Bennet, two players who are considered to be the best forwards in the draft.
Sam Gagner is a guy I wanted back in November of 2013 for the Carolina Hurricanes, and he is still a guy that can make an instant impact on the Carolina Hurricanes’ top six group of forwards and the power play.
Dreger also mentioned that Edmonton was looking for defensemen, and players like Jay Harrison or John-Michael Liles could also go back in a deal to address that need, to an extent.
