The Carolina Hurricanes resigned 33-year-old defenseman Ron Hainsey to a three year contract on Tuesday. With the draft just a few days away, could the Carolina Hurricanes be looking to move guys like Jay Harrison and John-Michael Liles?
With six defensemen currently under contract, and Brett Bellemore likely to resign with the team, the Carolina Hurricanes would be wise to move one, or both, of Jay Harrison and John-Michael Liles.
Jay Harrison will be an unrestricted free agent following the 2015-2016 season. With two years left on his current deal at $1.5 million per, Jay Harrison could be an attractive option for teams looking for a bottom pairing defenseman.
John-Michael Liles also has two years remaining on his current contract, but at a much less cap friendly number. Liles will have a $3.875 million cap hit for the next two seasons.
There have been talks that the Carolina Hurricanes may decide to buy-out the remainder of Liles’ contract, but that has not happened yet.
Trading a defenseman would open up room for a potential top-four upgrade on the back end, which is something the Carolina Hurricanes desperately need.
The top two on defense will likely be Justin Faulk and Andrej Sekera, and with Ryan Murphy, Brett Bellemore, and Ron Hainsey all likely to be on the roster next season, the Carolina Hurricanes are a top-four defenseman away from having an average, if not exceptional, defensive unit.
