NHL Trade Rumors: Carolina Hurricanes and San Jose Sharks Working on Huge Trade Involving Cam Ward and Patrick Marleau

Per Eklund of Hockey Buzz, the Carolina Hurricanes and San Jose Sharks are in talks on a potential blockbuster trade that could change the landscape of both franchises.

The rumors is that the Carolina Hurricanes would send Cam Ward, a former Stanley Cup champion and Conn Smythe winner, and two prospects to the San Jose Sharks for Patrick Marleau and a first round draft pick from the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

While it is fun and exciting to get behind a rumor like this, it is a bit naive to jump all in on this rumor as of now. Eklund has certainly been right about a lot of rumors, but he has also been wrong on many others.

Obviously the winner of a potential trade involving Ward and Marleau would depend on the prospects going to San Jose. Victor Rask and Brock McGinn are probably the best prospects in the Carolina Hurricanes organization, so a trade involving both of them likely wouldn’t be worth it.

Patrick Marleau could bring a lot of offensive potential and leadership to the Carolina Hurricanes, a team that could use both of that.

This will be interesting story to watch. As of now, there is no real traction to this rumor, but we all know that the NHL offseason is always unpredictable.

Not likely from either end of the discussion. Patty’s leadership is in serious question if that is what the Canes are looking for. What you get is speed and varying degrees of hustle.

Why would the Sharks want Cam Ward? They already have a Stanley Cup winning goalie who is under-performing, so why bring in another? As for Paddy going to the Canes, he has a no movement clause so I can’t see him approving a trade to Carolina. Btw if it does happen, then Canes fans should not assume he is a horrible playoff underachiever. Marleau has 103 points in 147 playoff games. He could use some more passion and emotion in the post season but he isn’t exactly the playoff dog the press makes him out to be. You notice that Mike Babcock and Stevie Y made sure he was on Team Canada at the Olympics!!

I’d like to see RF go for the #1 pick from FL for Murphy, a prospect and/or a draft pick. Plausible? Throw in Ward too. Ekblad looks like he is going to be a stud.

Ekblad certainly looks like a stud defenseman. The #1 pick would be very expensive though. It’ll be interesting to see if Ron Francis will want to move around at all in the draft.
