Bill Peters was introduced as the new head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday at a press conference at the PNC Arena.
Kirk Muller did the same thing in the same place in November of 2011, except it was then known as the RBC Center.
Both of these coaches entered their job with the Carolina Hurricanes with a wealth of prior coaching experience, including serving terms as NHL assistant coaches and AHL head coaches. Neither of the coaches had any prior NHL head coaching experience entering their tenure with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Though some things were similar between the two coaches, there are many more things that were different. One obvious difference between the two is that Bill Peters will not be coaching the Carolina Hurricanes in a game the next day against the Florida Panthers like Kirk Muller had to.
That being said, Bill Peters has already come in and established that he wants the most of his players. Kirk Muller came in and established that he wanted his players to just go out and have fun. He probably said the word “fun” at least ten times in his first interview on November 29, 2011.
I’m not saying that the game of hockey should be played without any fun or joy, but Bill Peters came in and told the media just how it is in his first day on the job.
Bill Peters was extremely straight forward in his presser on Friday. He came in prepared. Ron Francis even said that Peters basically conducted their interviews with presentations and slideshows, which is extremely impressive and promising.
He said that there needs to be a lot done. He said that he will use ice time as a reward and a punishment, and he’s not afraid to “swing the hammer”. He said he is out to change the culture of the Carolina Hurricanes, though we have heard that many times in the past.
Bill Peters has a history of success at every level of hockey. Though he isn’t a former long-time NHL’er like Kirk Muller, Bill Peters knows what he is doing, and he is ready to be a head coach in the NHL.
