NHL Trade Rumors: Carolina Hurricanes willing to Trade Eric Staal for Dion Phaneuf

According to Josh Rimer, the Toronto Maple Leafs are fielding offers for defenseman Dion Phaneuf. He also mentioned that Eric Staal‘s name has popped up several times in trade talk between the Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs.

“Leafs are trying to move him, and are getting some calls on him as well. The Sharks, Panthers and Hurricanes are the 3 teams I’m hearing that have interest in him. Keep hearing Eric Staal’s name in there for a possible Phaneuf deal. If he’s not moved by draft he’ll remain a Leaf.”

I doubt that the trade would happen straight up Dion Phaneuf for Eric Staal. Nazem Kadri and Tyler Bozak could be included in the deal to make it much more attractive for the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Carolina Hurricanes also have roster players that could go the other way. Patrick Dwyer, Drayson Bowman, Zach Boychuk, or someone else could go back to Toronto in a potential deal.

There is potential for a huge, blockbuster deal between the Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs would deal a star defenseman to the Canes for a player who has been a star scorer in the past and could do the same with Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk in Toronto.

An Eric Staal for Dion Phaneuf trade could benefit both the Carolina Hurricanes and the Toronto Maple Leafs, two teams with fan bases that are looking for something to cheer for.
