NHL Rumors: Pittsburgh Penguins to Interview Rod Brind’Amour and Jeff Daniels for Head Coach

Per William DePaoli of InsidePittsburghSports.com, the Pittsburgh Penguins plan on requesting permission from the Carolina Hurricanes to interview assistant coach Rod Brind’Amour and Charlotte Checkers coach Jeff Daniels for their vacant head coach position.

Of course, it is ultimately up to Ron Francis whether or not the Pittsburgh Penguins can interview them, because they are currently under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.

I think Ron Francis will give Penguins permission to interview Jeff Daniels, and I would be surprised if the Carolina Hurricanes did not give the Pens permission to talk to Rod Brind’Amour also.

That being said, there was a reason why everyone on the Carolina Hurricanes coaching staff was fired other than Rod Brind’Amour. I think Rod Brind’Amour could be a candidate for the Carolina Hurricanes coaching job.

These rumors spilling out yesterday could also help Rod Brind’Amour’s candidacy for head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes. In fear of losing Brind’Amour to another organization, the Carolina Hurricanes may be more inclined to offering him the head coach job in Raleigh.

Would that be the right move? Maybe, but the Carolina Hurricanes should only hire Rod Brind’Amour as head coach if they feel like he is a qualified choice.

Though Dejan Kovacevic reported that Rod Brind’Amour seems like the clubhouse favorite for the Pens job, Jeff Daniels holds ties with Mario Lemieux and is definitely on good terms with Penguins GM Jim Rutherford.

If Jeff Daniels was to leave the Carolina Hurricanes organization, it could open the door to bringing in someone like Cory Stillman, Director of Forwards Development for the Carolina Hurricanes, or Scott Walker, head coach of the Guelph Storm, to coach the Charlotte Checkers.

I think Mike Vellucci could step into the Checkers head coaching spot without blinking, but do you think they’d rather keep him Raleigh? I see him doing a lot more than “player development” or Assistant GM. He’s coached more than half the Checkers roster, so he would hit the ground running like no one else could if Daniels goes to Pittsburgh. You think he’ll spend more time in Raleigh or Charlotte?

I think Ron Francis would want him in Raleigh for Hockey Operations with the team. I expect him to be doing a lot with scouting also, which could also take him down to Charlotte, just like Ron Francis used to do when JR was GM. Francis used to always travel overseas to scout and down to Charlotte to see the development within the organization. I think Vellucci will do the same thing.
