Carolina Hurricanes: Head Coach Candidates Square Off in the Stanley Cup Final

The 2014 NHL Stanley Cup Final will feature two teams that weren’t favorites going into the season or the playoffs. The New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings will battle it out over the next week or two to decide who takes home Lord Stanley’s Cup.

Though the Carolina Hurricanes are far from being in the finals, they are still being affected by it. Ulf Samuelsson and John Stevens are assistant coaches for the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings, respectively.

Both of these assistant coaches are expected to explore head coaching options this summer, and it is likely that the Carolina Hurricanes will be knocking on both of their doors.

Ulf Samuelsson has had a very successful season in his first year as an assistant coach with the New York Rangers. Being a former teammate of Ron Francis, it seems likely that Francis will, at least, take a look at him as an option for the head coach vacancy.

John Stevens has already won a Stanley Cup as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings, and now he has a shot at number two. Unlike Ulf Samuelsson, Stevens has plenty of NHL head coaching experience, including multiple playoff appearances with the Philadelphia Flyers.

If you’re a fan of the Carolina Hurricanes that is looking for a reason to be interested in the Stanley Cup Final, here’s your reason. John Stevens or Ulf Samuelsson could be calling the shots in Raleigh later this month.
