The Washington Capitals have hired Barry Trotz as their new head coach. They also promoted Brian MacLellan to position of General Manager today.

The list of head coach options for the Carolina Hurricanes has decreased. Not only was Barry Trotz the biggest name head coach candidate this offseason, he may have been the best option for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Barry Trotz was the long-time head coach of the Nashville Predators. In 15 seasons at the helm of the Preds, Barry Trotz led the Nashville Predators to a 557-479-100-60 record. From 2003 to 2012, Trotz led the Predators to seven playoff births and four 100+ point seasons.

Kevin Dineen, John Tortorella, Ulf Samuelsson, and many others remain as potential head coach options for the Carolina Hurricanes, but now a decision may be drawing near.

Now that Washington has made the first head coach hire of the summer, expect other teams to jump out and hire their man. The Carolina Hurricanes will likely make their hire soon. They don’t want their favorite candidate to get snatched up by another team looking for a new head coach.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Carolina Hurricanes made their move before the end of the month of May. Ron Francis said he wants a coach in place before the draft takes place, if not much sooner. We are about a month away from June 27, the first day of the NHL Entry Draft.
