Over the next few weeks, Cardiac Cane will take a look at every player on the Carolina Hurricanes and see how they played in the 2013-2014 season.
2013-2014 Regular Season Stats: 74 games played, 11 goals, 33 assists, 44 points, +4
The Carolina Hurricanes acquired Andrej Sekera via trade on Draft Day 2013. The Canes shipped off Jamie McBain and the 35th pick in the 2013 draft for the 27-year-old Slovak defenseman.
Andrej Sekera was known for his defense more than his offense prior to the trade. Entering his first year in a Carolina Hurricanes jersey, Andrej Sekera had tallied 92 points in 339 NHL regular season games. The 2013-2014 season ended up being a terrific one for him and the Canes front office.
Many people described Andrej Sekera as “solid” or “steady” at the time of the trade, but people are using much different adjectives now. Andrej Sekera was the best defenseman on the Carolina Hurricanes during the 2013-2014 season. He was well above average in almost every area of his game.
He played a great two-way game for the Carolina Hurricanes, and he proved that he can be a top-two NHL defenseman. He also played well on the power play and penalty kill.
Andrej Sekera is entering the last year of his contract. The deal will pay him $2,750,000 this year, and that is a steal for the amount of production that he supplied for the Carolina Hurricanes in his first year.
If Andrej Sekera can live up to his, now, lofty expectations, he will be in for a big pay day at the end of the 2014-2015 season. That will come up during the season, but for now, the Carolina Hurricanes should just be happy to have Andrej Sekera on their team.
