What most had been expecting has finally come true as the Carolina Hurricanes relieved head coach Kirk Muller of his duties today. Assistant coaches Dave Lewis and John MacLean were also dismissed, while goaltending coach Greg Stefan was moved to the pro scouting department. Muller had an 80-80-27 record with the Canes.

Assistant coach Rod Brind’Amour was the only coach retained and kept in the same position.

GM Ron Francis had this to say on the moves in a press release from the Hurricanes’ website:

“We thank Kirk, John and Dave for their time and effort during the past three seasons. Kirk and his staff worked very hard, but we feel that the team is in need of a fresh start at this time.”

Francis will also be holding a press conference at 2 p.m.

But I think the second part of his quote is really what most would agree with. Muller The team needed a change and with Muller at the helm, that wasn’t going to happen.

With all three coaches being fired, it will also allow the next coach to come in and create the landscape he wants.

Now the speculation begins. Brind’Amour was kept around, Kevin Dineen is on most peoples lists, Barry Trotz was just fired and Guy Boucher is still looking for a job.

Either way, this is the first correct move, but who is brought in will be scrutinized more.
