I agree with Andrew. Jim Rutherford is one of the big reasons that hockey has succeeded the way it has in North Carolina. He turned a struggling relocated team into a Stanley Cup finalist in five years, brought a future Hall of Famer in to the organization, and ended up bringing North Carolina its first professional sports championship in under ten years.
The last five years have been remarkably tough for Jim Rutherford and the Carolina Hurricanes organization, but he does not deserve all the blame. Players have underperformed at times during these stretches, and the roster has underachieved as a whole very often over the past five playoff-less years.
That being said, he did make some questionable deal with players. He has been known to overpay his players over the years, but he has also made very good deals. Bringing in Andrej Sekera and Anton Khudobin for almost nothing are two recent examples of this.
At the end of the day, Jim Rutherford made a huge difference for the Carolina Hurricanes, and the past five years should not soil his reputation too much amongst the fans.
