My Opinion

As has been discussed plenty of times, the Hurricanes’ cap situation is a tough one. High salaries handed out by Rutherford has crippled the team with seven players making up a huge chunk of the cap.

But as unfortunate as it is, that’s the case and the Canes have to attempt to fix the problem. The seven players aren’t bad, but a strong support system is needed above all else.

First a number-three defenseman is needed. Ron Hainsey won’t cut it and Andrej Sekera and Justin Faulk can’t do everything. Ryan Murphy could be that someday, but that day won’t be next season. Nearly everyone has said Marc Staal, but I seriously hope the Canes explore more options.

Then the work on the bottom six begins. It could be solved in free agency, but it’s more likely that a trade would fix it, which isn’t ever an easy thing to do.
