Carolina Hurricanes' Defenseman Andrej Sekera Undergoes Successful Abdominal Surgery

G.M. Jim Rutherford announced today that Carolina Hurricanes’ defenseman Andrej Sekera underwent successful abdominal surgery in Philadelphia. The surgery was performed by Dr. William C. Myers.

The Slovakian defenseman will miss the remainder of the Carolina Hurricanes season due to the surgery. He has been battling through the injury for much of the second half of the season.

Andrej Sekera leads all Carolina Hurricanes defensemen in goals, assists, points, blocked shots, power play goals, and shorthanded goals. Sekera ranks second amongst Carolina Hurricanes skaters in assists and plus/minus. He ranks third in points behind Eric Staal and Jeff Skinner.

The 2014 Olympian is expected to be out of commission for approximately six weeks, but that doesn’t matter since the Carolina Hurricanes did not qualify for the NHL Playoffs. After the six weeks, Andrej Sekera is expected to be just fine.

The Carolina chapter of the Professional Hockey Writer’s Association (PHWA) named Andrej Sekera the Carolina Hurricanes’ team MVP for the 2013-2014 season.

Andrej Sekera was the team’s best defenseman throughout the entire year, and knowing he was dealing with a significant injury through much of that time makes his season even more impressive. He was able to form a very good top-two defensive pair with Justin Faulk this season in Carolina.

Coming into this season, Andrej Sekera’s career high in points was 29 back in the 2010-2011 season. He shattered that with 44 points this season for the Hurricanes.

Andrej Sekera was acquired at the 2013 NHL Draft from the Buffalo Sabres for Jamie McBain and the 35th overall pick in the draft
