It looks like Kirk Muller‘s time with the Carolina Hurricanes is coming to a close, which means the Carolina Hurricanes should look into their options when it comes to their new head coach.
John Stevens is currently an assistant coach of the Los Angeles Kings, and has been for each of the last three seasons. He was a part of LA’s Stanley Cup winning team in 2012.
He played a huge part in the Los Angeles Kings’ incredibly successful run over the past few years, and he has led their penalty kill to one of the best in the league since 2010. Los Angeles had the fourth ranked PK in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 and the 10th ranked PK in the 2013 shortened season.
Before his time with the Los Angeles Kings, John Stevens coached the Philadelphia Flyers from 2006-2009. He led the Flyers to the Eastern Conference Finals in the 2007-2008 season en route to winning The Hockey News’ Coach of the Year award.
The next season, John Stevens led the team to a 44-27-11 record (99 points) and the team’s second straight playoff appearance. He was relieved of his duties with the Flyers on December 4, 2009 after starting the 2009-2010 with a 13-11-1 record.
John Stevens was considered a front runner for Vancouver’s head coaching job last summer before John Tortorella was hired by Mike Gillis, the GM of the Vancouver Canucks.
Darryl Sutter, head coach of the LA Kings, also thinks that he deserves another shot as an NHL head coach…
“Hey, I think Johnny is a head coach. I think he is a head coach with us… And does Johnny Stevens want to be a head coach? Absolutely.”
John Stevens should be the next head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes. He will likely be looking for a head coaching job this summer, and he has exactly what the Carolina Hurricanes need in their new head coach.
John Stevens is known as a total class guy around the league. He has plenty of experience as an NHL Head Coach and Assistant Coach, and has won a Stanley Cup as a member of a great coaching staff in Los Angeles.
While John Stevens is my number one pick for next head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes, they have many options this summer. They could choose a different coach from outside of the organization, they can stay within the organization, or they can stay with Kirk Muller.
If any one is ready to be a head coach again in the NHL, it is John Stevens. The Carolina Hurricanes would be pretty foolish to not consider John Stevens as a potential replacement for Kirk Muller.
