Steve Downie has made a living of being a tough, gritty forward who can supply some sporadic offense. Downie’s tough and gritty brand of hockey is something that the Carolina Hurricanes need in their bottom-six.

Currently, no one in the bottom-six has the grit that Steve Downie has. The former first round pick is on the Philadelphia Flyers right now. Players like Kimmo Timonen, Andre MacDonald, and Ray Emery all have expiring contracts at season’s end. It will be difficult to keep all of them, and Downie may be the odd man out.

Steve Downie has 24 points (4 goals, 20 assists) and is a +3 on the season with Colorado Avalanche and Philadelphia Flyers. His 106 penalty minutes also shows his grit. Steve Downie would fit perfectly in the bottom-six.
