You don’t need a great reason to get people to agree to what Mark is saying, but he makes a great one anyways. Players are not put into the right roles to succeed with the team.
Manny Malhotra is supposed to be a third-line center because he was good on the fourth, Patrick Dwyer is a top-six winger because the team needed him to be one last season and Ryan Murphy is playing a defensive role because of injuries. Every single one of those are just the wrong roles for those players.
Malhotra’s a fourth-liner, Dwyer a shutdown winger and Murphy an offensive d-man still growing. But instead they’ve been thrown into the wrong roles.
And the blame can be placed on both the general manager and coach. Jim Rutherford hasn’t gone out and signed the free agents or traded for the players that fit these roles, but Kirk Muller hasn’t played the players he has in the right roles, either. Because of that, changes are needed.
