The Carolina Hurricanes recalled defenseman Michal Jordan from the Charlotte Checkers today on an emergency basis.

Jordan has 15 points in 53 games. This is his first callup this season, but played five games with the team last season.

This recall is a little surprising. Justin Faulk and John-Michael Liles didn’t skate at practice today, but the team still had six healthy d-men at practice with the callup of Ryan Murphy last week.

It’s possible someone else got injured at practice, or coach Kirk Muller hasn’t liked the play of another defenseman and would like to see a different option in the lineup.

Jordan has played well, statistically lately, which could have been another reason for the callup.

The Czech defenseman is known for his puck-moving ability rather than his defensive play, so if he is in the lineup tomorrow against the New York Rangers, Jordan may see some time on the powerplay.

Jordan has paid his dues in the AHL and as a 23-year-old, now is the time when it becomes clear whether a later-round pick (Jordan was chosen in the fourth-round of the 2008 draft) will make it or not.

Last season, Brett Bellemore played eight games with the Canes, helping to prove he was ready for the big time. The same may happen for Michal Jordan.
