We are approaching the NHL Trade Deadline, and we finally have our first big trade. The Buffalo Sabres traded Ryan Miller and Steve Ott to the St. Louis Blues for Jaroslav Halak, Chris Stewart, William Carrier, and two draft picks. Will this trade open the floodgates for more big trades?
A lot of the time, NHL teams are pretty hesitant to make a significant trade around the trade deadline. It usually takes one big trade to start a series of trades around the NHL, and this was certainly a big and highly anticipated trade.
Big names remain on the market. Chris Stewart and Jaroslav Halak have been traded, but it is still possible that they will be dealt again by the Buffalo Sabres. In fact, I think it is likely. Big name players like Ryan Callahan, Cam Ward, Thomas Vanek, and Matt Moulson are all still available on the trade market.
Now that Ryan Miller has been dealt, Cam Ward is now the big name goalie involved in NHL trade rumors. NHL Teams may take another look at Cam Ward now, since the main attraction, Ryan Miller, is off the market.
Even if Cam Ward is not drawing the most attention, Ryan Miller is off the trade market. This means that the three goalies for the Carolina Hurricanes will start to get more attention from other NHL teams.
Up to this point, NHL teams have been quiet when it comes to trades. Hopefully this big trade will change that.
