  • Corey Sznajder goes over the decline of Cam Ward (Shutdown Line)

My Opinion: Injuries have certainly played a big role in the decline of Ward recently. Dealing with a knee injury last season to the ones this season, it’s not easy for the netminder to find a groove or have any consistency. That being said if he was still elite, Ward would probably be having a more successful season.

Kari Lehtonen has had some awful injury history, but is still considered an above-average goalie capable of being a strong part of a team’s success for instance. The same can’t really be said about Ward over the past two years. But I believe the biggest reason for Ward’s decline is Anton Khudobin.

Three-plus years ago when Ward had a couple of bad breaks, it was fine in Carolina. There was no other answer in net with John Graham to Manny Legace to Brian Boucher to Justin Peters as backups.

Now for the first time since Ward took over the job from Martin Gerber there is actually a more-than-competent backup, who has competed for the starting job, which has lowered the approval rate of Ward.
