With Cam Ward getting closer and closer to his return for the Carolina Hurricanes, that will bring up the trade discussions involving Carolina Hurricanes goaltenders, once again.
Right now it looks like Justin Peters will be the odd-man out. He hasn’t seen much action since the new year, Anton Khudobin has been very good as the starter, and the Carolina Hurricanes likely won’t consider moving Cam Ward until the off season.
There are a few teams that cold use a goalie, and some teams make more sense than others. Let’s take a look at the teams.
The New York Islanders goals against this year has been awful, even though they are playing much better as of late.
The Isles starter, Evgeni Nabakov, is 38-year-old, and he will be 39 before the start of next season. They need to start thinking about a younger replacement for the veteran goaltender. Justin Peters could be a cheap option for the New York Islanders.
The Calgary Flames also find themsleves near the bottom of the league for goals against per game. They are giving up over three goals a game on the season. Karri Ramo and Reto Berra have shared starts this year in Calgary, and both of them have less impressive stats than Justin Peters.
The Calgary Flames intrigue me more so than any other team for one reason. That reason is Mikael Backlund. The Carolina Hurricanes could kill two birds with one stone here, so to speak. The Carolina Hurricanes could get rid of their excess of goalies, and fill their third-line center need in one trade.
Obviously, the Calgary Flames would not accept Justin Peters for Mikael Backlund straight up. The Carolina Hurricanes would likely have to throw more into the deal to get it through. If the right deal is there, a Justin Peters trade to Calgary could work well for both teams.
Just a few years ago, it looked like the Florida Panthers’ future star goalie would be Jacob Markstrom. Now it looks like there may be some doubt in that area. The 24-year-old Swede has played 48 NHL games with a goals against average of 3.21 and a save percentage of .898%. Could the Florida Panthers have interest in Justin Peters.
Tim Thomas has played well this year, but the 39-year-old veteran is nearing the end of his long professional career. Justin Peters could team up with Jacob Markstrom long-term and potentially make a good one-two punch for the Florida Panthers until one of them steps up and claims the starting goalie spot.
The Carolina Hurricanes are rapidly approaching the time where a decision needs to be made regarding the goalies. While Justin Peters may only be worth a mid-round draft pick, he is likely the goalie that the Carolina Hurricanes will part ways with.
