Carolina Hurricanes Recall Aaron Palushaj

The Carolina Hurricanes have recalled Aaron Palushaj from the Charlotte Checkers to replace the injured Eric Staal in the lineup today against the Nashville Predators.

The length of Staal’s injury has not been announced yet, but Elias Lindholm will be back soon with the World Juniors almost finished, so it’s unlikely that Palushaj sticks with the team.

Palushaj was signed over the offseason after splitting last year with the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche. In 34 games, he has 28 points with the Checkers and is leading the team in scoring. The American winger has been on a tear lately with 14 points in his last 11 games.

Palushaj is known more as a defensive winger, so expect him to play more of a role in that regard, rather than an offensive one he has had in the AHL. Coach Kirk Muller only played Brett Sutter two minutes against the Washington Capitals, so it’s also possible Palushaj may not see much time tonight.

This is Palushaj’s first callup with the Hurricanes, so it will be good for the team to see how he does in the rotation. So far, they have tried out Brett Sutter, Chris Terry and Zach Boychuk as injury replacements and Boychuk is the only one that has looked decent in the NHL. Palushaj has a chance to change that tonight.
