The Carolina Hurricanes made a big trade on Wednesday that sent Tim Gleason to the Toronto Maple Leafs for John-Michael Liles and a prospect, but it looks like the Carolina Hurricanes aren’t finished yet.
According to Chip Alexander, the Carolina Hurricanes may not be done dealing.
Hearing Canes may not be through. Still could be looking for third-line center.

Up to this point, Riley Nash has been the Carolina Hurricanes third-line center. He has been a steady player in that role, but he still hasn’t provided consistent offense.
Riley Nash is now injured, so the Carolina Hurricanes aren’t only down a forward, they are down their third-line center. Riley Nash is expected to be out 1-2 weeks with the injury.
Now would be a good time to acquire a third-line center. A month or so ago, Mikael Backlund was a trade target for the Carolina Hurricanes. Darren Dreger reported that the Carolina Hurricanes made an offer for the Swedish center, but the Calgary Flames rejected the offer.
I think Mikael Backlund would be a great fit for the Carolina Hurricanes. He would fit nicely on the third line and the power play. He has really solid advanced stats that could help the Carolina Hurricanes.
The big question is, what would the Carolina Hurricanes have to give up for the 23-year-old center? They would probably have to give up a player like Jiri Tlusty or one of their goaltenders. With Jiri Tlusty and Cam Ward both injured, it seems unlikely that the Carolina Hurricanes would be able to acquire him right now, unless they want to move a guy like Tuomo Ruutu.
Another, more realistic, option would be Rich Peverley. The Dallas Stars center would be a very good player to put in the third-line role. He is experienced, and he has solid playmaking ability. He is a very good two-way forward to have in the bottom six. Peverley would likely be significantly easier to acquire.
Those are just a couple of options that the Carolina Hurricanes have for a third-line center.
It looks like the Carolina Hurricanes are still looking to make moves, and it makes sense to do them soon.
