Carolina Hurricanes Trade Rumors: Kevin Westgarth Trade Is A Set-Up For A Much Bigger Trade

The Carolina Hurricanes traded enforcing forward Kevin Westgarth to the Calgary Flames for former first round pick Greg Nemisz, a winger who has yet to turn into an NHL player.

At first, this looks like a pretty minor trade, but this trade could definitely be a set-up for a much bigger trade that the Carolina Hurricanes can do in the near future.

Trading Kevin Westgarth opens up an NHL roster by removing an NHL contract. Westgarth was a player that rarely got in the Carolina Hurricanes lineup. He was a waste of a roster spot, and his only real responsibility was to mix it up with opposing players. Westgarth rarely did this, so it was pointless to keep him.

Darren Dreger tweeted this after the Carolina Hurricanes trade:

“Seems to be more trade activity brewing around the Hurricanes. Could be an interesting night.”
It looks like this trade was definitely a set up trade to open up an NHL roster spot. It will be interesting to see who the Carolina Hurricanes will go after. It will likely be a forward.
It finally looks like Jim Rutherford is starting to take action. He talked to Ron Francis and Kirk Muller yesterday about what the team needed to do in order to improve, so it looks like it may have been a meaningful conversation.
The upcoming hours and days will be interesting. Will Tuomo Ruutu or Tim Gleason finally be sent packing after all the rumors surrounding them, or will someone else be sent out of Raleigh? Cardiac Cane will keep you updated.
