The Carolina Hurricanes are still involved in trade rumors. They just will not stop. I think there are a few things they should consider doing that could improve their chances of making it into the playoffs. These things include moves within the organization, and getting help from outside of the organization.
Trading Tim Gleason
The Tim Gleason trade rumors have been swirling around for weeks. I think it is time to pull the trigger. With players like Ryan Murphy and Brett Bellemore now playing in the lineup every night, the Carolina Hurricanes can afford to trade a defenseman. Defensemen like Brett Bellemore, Jay Harrison and Mike Komisaek all bring the “physical defensive defenseman” acumen that Tim Gleason brings.
I think going out and getting a top-six forward or an upgrade on the blue line would be the way to go here. A puck-moving defenseman that can quarterback a power play would really help the struggling Carolina Hurricanes power play. I don’t see a top six forward as a big need for the Carolina Hurricanes. The first line has been on fire lately, and a second line of Jordan Staal, Alex Semin and Nathan Gerbe isn’t bad. They could get an upgrade for Nathan Gerbe, but I don’t think it is necessary.
Trading A Goalie
Everybody has an opinion on which goalie the Carolina Hurricanes should trade. Jim Rutherford has already said he will not trade Cam Ward, so it will be Justin Peters or Anton Khudobin. I think the best option right now is to wait, but if a trade was to be made very soon, I think it should be Anton Khudobin who gets moved. Justin Peters has been one of the league’s hottest goalies, and it looks like he is turning into the goalie we all hoped he would be.
The Carolina Hurricanes would also probably get more in return for Anton Khudobin as well. It’s a difficult situation. They would have to make a trade either today or tomorrow due to the holiday trade freeze that lasts from December 19-December 26. No teams can make a trade during that time.
Call Up Zach Boychuk
The Carolina Hurricanes now need to replace Elias Lindholm since he is probably going to play for Sweden is the WJC. The Carolina Hurricanes will have to bring up a forward, and Zach Boychuk is the best option, unless they trade for a forward. Boychuk played one game earlier in the year for the Carolina Hurricanes, and he registered an assist in that game. He played pretty well on the fourth line. He has also continued to light up the AHL with 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) in 26 games.
Victor Rask, another Swedish center, is another option to replace Lindholm. Rask has 15 points (5 goals, 10 assists) in 26 games. Chris Terry, who played in seven games earlier this year for the Carolina Hurricanes, is another option. The winger has 19 points (10 goals, 9 assists) in 20 games with the Charlotte Checkers.
