The Carolina Hurricanes AHL affiliate Charlotte Checkers have signed goaltender John Muse to a contract that will last through the season’s end. This is John Muse’s second contract with the Charlotte Checkers.
He started the year in the East Coast Hockey League as a goalie for the Fort Wayne Komets. He was then signed to a professional tryout when Justin Peters was called up to the Carolina Hurricanes following Anton Khudobin’s injury. Muse went 9-6-0 in 16 starts during his PTO with a pair of shutouts.
Now that the Charlotte Checkers have signed Muse, this adds another goalie to the depth chart, which means the Carolina Hurricanes could be close to trading a goalie. The recent trade rumors, the fact that Anton Khudobin has been medically cleared to play, and now this signing could be coincidental, but it looks like a trade may be in the works.
This is significant news. With Muse under contract, that now leaves the Carolina Hurricanes with three NHL goalies and two AHL goalies under contract. If I were to guess, I’d say a trade would happen very soon. Anton Khudobin seems like the favorite to be moved at this point. He has finally been medically cleared to play, so that could be what the Carolina Hurricanes have been waiting for. They could also trade the hot goalie, Justin Peters. If the Carolina Hurricanes want to make a trade soon, it will have to be either today or tomorrow due to the holiday trade freeze that lasts from December 19-December 26.
Now the question is, will a trade be made within the next 24 hours? The next day or so will interesting for sure.
