The trade rumors surrounding the Carolina Hurricanes lately have been nothing short of exhausting. It finally seems like the Carolina Hurricanes are close to pulling off a trade. Specifically, one involving a goalie. The Carolina Hurricanes really need to think about all their options prior to trading one of their goalies.
Let’s be real here, the Carolina Hurricanes will likely not trade Cam Ward this season. They just won’t. His salary is too high, and it is too much of a risk to put the goalie situation onto two goalies who have yet too show they can consistently start in the NHL. The Carolina Hurricanes may have to unload a goalie, and it will either be Anton Khudobin or Justin Peters. The Canes need to really think about it before they decide who they trade. Yesterday, Wes Herrmann talked about why the Carolina Hurricanes should trade Justin Peters, not Anton Khudobin.
I’m torn. I don’t think trading Justin Peters is the best decision. Since Nov. 5, Justin Peters has allowed four goals in one game just once. Peters faced 47 shots in the only game where he allowed four goals. Peters has been playing like a starting goalie, so you could capitalize on his value, but that seems like an approach for a non-playoff team. The Carolina Hurricanes are competing for a playoff spot, and trading the hot goalie seems like a bad idea to me, especially since he has been so consistent, even when he has been in the back-up role. That’s just my opinion.
Trading Anton Khudobin also could be a bad idea. He played great hockey for the Carolina Hurricanes early this year. Unfortunately, his injury has really set him back. On the other hand, you’d probably get more back for Khudobin. The former Bruin could come back and earn his job too, so right now, I think the Carolina Hurricanes should just wait before trading a goalie.
If the Carolina Hurricanes do trade a goalie soon, they need to think about all the options. A goalie trade could make a huge influence on this team, now it is Jim Rutherford’s job to make sure it is a positive influence.
