Carolina Hurricanes Trade Rumors: Anton Khudobin

The Carolina Hurricanes have a logjam at goalie with Anton Khudobin coming back soon and as has been speculated for a while now, GM Jim Rutherford could move one of them.

Originally the thought was to move Justin Peters, who shows less promise and has a much weaker career than Khudobin. But a new rumor from Lyle Richardson says the Hurricanes may be trying to move Khudobin.

[THE HOCKEY NEWS RUMOR]

The rumor from Richardson says the Hurricanes are in the market for a defenseman and that Rutherford has received phone calls from other teams inquiring about his goalies.

Michael Del Zotto and Jake Gardiner were mentioned as possible trade targets for the Canes, but also says with the team’s recent play, a trade may not be imminent.

Most of this rumor is a rehashing of what we’ve been hearing for the past few weeks. It obviously makes sense for Rutherford to trade one of the goalies and Khudobin would bring more of a return that Peters would.

However, I wouldn’t expect a trade to happen until the end of the current road trip. The Canes have played well in the first two games, but suffered losses. They did earn a point in Edmonton last night, though.

If the team does not earn a win in Calgary or Phoenix, then I would expect a trade to come. For now, sitting on three goalies and letting Khudobin take the time to heal isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

If the Canes do not earn a win this week, they could look to the New York Islanders, as stated in the rumor, as they desperately need a goalie.
