My Opinion: I’m not exactly sold on trading for Backlund – he still has potential, but I’m worried that the Flames will ask for too much. It’s obvious that Backlund could help the Canes offense. As Mark points out his Corsi numbers and numbers when starting in the defensive zone are impressive.
But the Flames are in a rebuild mode and looking for a player around Backlund’s age, who is 24-years-old. Ironically, Jiri Tlusty, who Mark uses as an example as a player that has flourished with the Hurricanes, could be a return chip if there was a trade for Backlund.
The Hurricanes would have to add though, which is where it can become scary. An included first-round pick would be too much. Including a second-round pick could be deadly as the Canes didn’t have one in last year’s draft and only made five selections. Backlund could be a great acquisition, but the Hurricanes need to be smart about asset management.
