The Hurricanes aren’t the only ones going through a rough stretch, as the Red Wings have not earned a win in the last seven games. However, they’ve been able to pick up points as five of those losses have been in overtime or the shootout.

Some of the Red Wings’ troubles have come with scoring. The team is currently missing Stephen Weiss and Daniel Alfredsson, which has taken a hit on the team’s depth on offense. But Gustav Nyquist will help the cause as he is making his return to the lineup.

Right now the Red Wings aren’t playing with a lot of confidence and the Canes need to jump on that. It will be hard to do that going into the Joe Louis Arena, but if the Hurricanes get off to a fast start, it may take the Detroit crowd out of the game.

The Hurricanes lineup is a question for the most part. Jeff Skinner could return tonight, which would be huge as Alex Semin will be out for a while with a concussion. Kevin Westgarth is also nearing a return, but will likely only play if Skinner cannot.

On defense, Ron Hainsey and Jay Harrison have missed practice, while dealing with the flu. It has not been announced if either will play or not.

UPDATE: Skinner will make his return, while it looks like Harrison will sit out.

The Canes could only score once against the Bruins, and while it was nice that Tuomo Ruutu finally got on the board, the team needs more scoring as has been a problem for most of the season. If Skinner returns, he’s bound to help in that regard, but it won’t be easy against the defensively tight Red Wings.

A recap will be posted after the game.
