The Carolina Hurricanes have placed center Brett Sutter on waivers today with the purpose of sending him to the Charlotte Checkers. He can be claimed by the 29 other teams. It will be announced tomorrow at noon whether he was claimed or not.
Sutter earned a spot out of training camp with the Hurricanes and has played in 12 games this season, recording no points and nine penalty minutes. However, the 26-year-old was used in a fourth line role and on the penalty kill.
Sutter didn’t look bad in his 12 games with the Canes, but didn’t stand out either. He’ll be a valuable call up in the future.
It is unlikely a team claims Sutter off of waivers, but stranger things have happened.
With the signing of Manny Malhotra earlier this week, Sutter’s place on the roster was effectively filled, but with the rash of injuries, the Canes needed the bodies to dress a full team.
And speaking of injuries, it’s likely that somebody, either Jeff Skinner, Kevin Westgarth or Radek Dvorak is returning for the game Tuesday, as the waiving of Sutter opens up a roster spot for someone to come off injured reserve.
