Tim Gleason Put On IR
If you thought the injury bug was bad last season, it may be worse this season. Tim Gleason was put on IR today after suffering a concussion during an exhibition game against the Montreal Canadiens.
It’s likely Gleason suffered the concussion during a fight. He left the game after the first period and did not return and has not participated in practice.
Right now, Gleason’s injury is listed as out indefinitely, which is a bad thing for the Canes. His veteran presence could really be used on the blue line.
By putting Gleason and Tuomo Ruutu on IR, the Hurricanes have opened up two roster spots.
Ryan Murphy Sent To Checkers
Despite losing Gleason, the Hurricanes still decided to return Murphy to the Charlotte Checkers, meaning that Brett Bellemore and Matt Corrente has made the team.
I’m not against Murphy playing for the Checkers. He’ll learn a lot there and won’t hurt his development, but I would prefer seeing Murphy in the lineup rather than Corrente.
However, with Gleason, Ruutu and Joni Pitkanen going on IR tomorrow, the Hurricanes have opened up a lot of cap space which could lead to a trade or signing.
UPDATE: Murphy appears to have been sent down because of cap issues and should be back for the season opener.
Update On Radek Dvorak
Accroding to Bob McKenzie, the Hurricanes have offered a contract to Dvorak.
I would like to see Dvorak make the team as I think he would bring a veteran presence to the bottom six and would not cost a lot. We’ll see if the two sides can work out a deal.
