Carolina Hurricanes: Brenden Morrow Update

It looks like the Carolina Hurricanes and Brenden Morrow rumors aren’t over as Josh Rimer tweeted two interesting tweets last night:

If Morrow did sign with the Canes, he would either play with Jordan Staal and Tuomo Ruutu or on the third line with Elias Lindholm and Jeff Skinner.

Right now young players are competing for those spots on the roster, but after this tweet from Michael Smith, things aren’t looking good for some of those players:

Right now, the Canes have just over $1 million in cap space, which isn’t enough money to sign Morrow, but once the season starts Joni Pitkanen and his $4.5 million can go on LTIR and would give the team about $5.6 million in cap space, which would be more than enough to sign the former Pittsburgh Penguin.

Morrow is likely looking for a contract around the $2 million range, which wouldn’t be that bad of a contract. He’ll bring veteran stability and works hard, even if his game has deficiencies now.

For one, the 34-year-old has slowed down in his older age and the scoring touch he showed when he was younger has dried up. He’s too slow to help too much in the defensive end, but is fine in his own end.

If Morrow does sign with the Hurricanes, the earliest will be October 1, so don’t expect Morrow to join the team too soon.
