Joni Pitkanen Out For Season

The Carolina Hurricanes learned the worst news possible today – Joni Pitkanen will miss the 2013-14 season.

This leaves a huge hole in the Canes defense, but right now the main worry should be Pitkanen’s career which looks over at this point.

The Fin has dealt with a slew of injuries in his past, but this is the most serious. Hopefully he will be able to make a comeback in the near future.

As for GM Jim Rutherord, Although the offseason is just about over with training camp starting tomorow, his toughest assignment starts now in replacing Pitkanen.

There is the easy option of using Ryan Murphy in Pitkanen’s place, signing Ron Hainsey or Tom Gilbert, or the more difficult and pricey option of making a trade.

Trade options could be Braydon Coburn, Andrej Meszaros, Matt Niskanen and Cody Franson (even if Toronto fans hate me for my earlier blog).

Training camp starts tomorrow, so a defenseman invited to camp is not all too likely. If Hainsey or Gilbert wanted to go to a camp, they would already be at one.

Over the next week or so, the Canes will have discussions on what to do, whether it is a trade, signing or keeping Murphy. But replacing Pitkanen is not going to be easy.
