My Opinion: I agree with Corey that it would be smart to take Staal off of the penalty kill. It’s not that he’s bad defensively, it’s that the playing the penalty kill can be a waste of Staal’s energy when the Hurricanes need him to score.

Of course, there’s always the possibility of a man-down goal from Staal and Alexander Semin, but that won’t happen every game.

But there is also the problem of who will replace Staal on the penalty kill. Riley Nash and Jordan Staal are both centers that can play the penalty kill, with the chance that Elias Lindholm can take a few shifts also.

That may be enough to replace the oldest Staal on the penalty kill, but coach Kirk Muller will have to decide if he wants Staal as a threat on the kill or more rested for even strength.
