Over the next 10 days, Cardiac Cane will look at the top 10 prospects in the Carolina Hurricanes’ system. Taken into account will be potential and how soon the player could make the Hurricanes’ roster, among other things.
Previously: #3 Victor Rask
#2 Ryan Murphy
Background: Drafted in the first round of the 2011 Draft. Played for the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL before joining the Checkers in the playoffs last year.
The Hurricanes best defensive prospect, Ryan Murphy, had a good chance of making the team this season, but since the signing of Mike Komisarek, it looks like Murphy will play with the Charlotte Checkers.
Murphy brings what any good defenseman can: fast skating, good presence in both zones and confidence. Him and Justin Faulk will be the future of the Canes’ defense.
The 20-year-old is likely ready for the NHL, but having him play a year with the Checkers isn’t a bad thing. Murphy will continue to develop and grow his game and will make the transition to the NHL even easier.
Patience is usually the best way to handle a budding propsect and it’s good to see the Canes taking that approach with Murray.
Next season, Murphy will most likely make the team as Komisarek and Joni Pitkanen are free agents.
