Over the next 10 days, Cardiac Cane will look at the top 10 prospects in the Carolina Hurricanes’ system. Taken into account will be potential and how soon the player could make the Hurricanes’ roster, among other things.
Background: Has played for the Guelph Storm for the past three seasons. Last season he was named assistant captain and scored 54 points in 68 games. He was signed to an ELC by the Hurricanes in April.
The younger brother of two NHL-ers, McGinn could be joining them in the NHL in the near future.
McGinn is a small, power-forward just like his brothers with a touch of scoring ability and defensive play.
Because of that, the second-round pick is a perfect checking-line forward. He’s not afraid of the rough stuff and can also help on the defensive end of the ice.
However, it’s unlikely that McGinn develops more into a second or first-line scorer. Before last year he was not a prolific scorer. His season-high was 18 points in 33 games.
Next season, the Ontario native will likely play for the Charlotte Checkers, unless if he impresses at camp.
There are still openings in the bottom six and given the Canes need for defensive players with grit, McGinn could be a viable option.
If McGinn doesn’t make the team next season, he would most likely be ready in 2014-15 with a year under of pro hockey under his belt.
But right now with McGinn’s skill set, it looks like he will have a future in the NHL.
