Ference will not be returning to the Boston Bruins and this could be a good thing for the Hurricanes.

The Edmonton native is exactly what the Canes need. A smooth-skating defenseman that excels in his own end and can hit. Ference can also play over 20 minutes a game, so if need be he can move up the depth chart rather than just playing on the third pairing.

Last season, Ference made $2.25 million. He’ll be looking for salary around the same price, maybe even more depending on if a bidding war starts for him.

Ference may be getting older at 34-years-old, but the impact he could bring on the Canes’ roster for the next couple seasons could be huge.
