My Opinion: The proposal of trading the fifth pick and Jamie McBain to the Buffalo Sabres for the eighth and sixteenth pick is too favorable to the Canes. The Sabres are giving up a lot for a draft pick three spots higher and a bottom-pairing defenseman.

However, Darnell Nurse and Anthony Matta would be great choices for the Canes to take at those two spots. Trading Justin Peters to move up in the draft isn’t a bad idea. He most likely won’t make an impact in the future for the Hurricanes, so why not try drafting someone that could?

I highly doubt the Hurricanes will find a suitor for Zach Boychuk, even if it is a lower pick. Teams had chances of taking before in waivers and there’s no reason to believe Boychuk won’t be entering free agency this summer.

Jones took two goalies in the draft, which isn’t a bad idea considering Cam Ward is already 30.
