After taking on the Oklahoma City Barons for the past two nights, the Checkers head to Houston to take on the Aeros for a Sunday matinee. So far this weekend the Checekrs have earned 4 points, collecting a 7-0 shutout win Friday night and a 4-3 OT win Saturday night against the Barons.
The Checkers will be without Drayson Bowman, Zach Boychuk, Jeremy Welsh, Tim Wallace, Bobby Sanguinetti and Dan Ellis as they missed last night’s game to join the Hurricanes organization for their training camp. However, they have a handful of new talent that they have called up. First off, defenseman Beau Schmitz who, despite having no goals in 31 games, has 25 penalty minutes racked up and 2 assists with the Everblades. The Checkers have also recalled goaltender John Muse from the Everblades who holds a 9-8-4 record, 3.61 goals against average and .886 save percentage in 1229 minutes of play. Along with A.J. Jenks the Checkers also called upon Matt Beca, Matthew Pastilli and Leigh Salters to fill some open roster spots.
Know Thy Enemy:
The Checkers aren’t the only team that is trying to fill roster gaps as the Aeros have signed Chris Reed to a professional tryout contract (PTO) and Paul Mara to a standard player contract. Reed has appeared in 31 games this season with the Cincinnati Cyclones (ECHL) and posted 1 goal and 8 assists. He also ranks among the top ten skaters with a +17 rating.
Mara has appeared in over 700 National Hockey League games with time spent with the Lightning, Coyotes, Rangers, Bruins, Canadiens and Ducks. He has played in 28 games this season adn posted 17 goals and 1 assist for the Ontario Reign.
The puck is scheduled to drop at 6:05pm and can be heard on AHL Live. With any luck the Checkers will come out of this game victorious, proving they are a great team with or without their top scorers in the lineup, leaving nothing to stand in their way.
