Preview: Checkers Set Their Sights on the Stars

Tonight the Charlotte Checkers are set to take on the Texas Stars for their third meeting on the season.  While the Stars hold a 2-0 advantage on the series, the Checkers aren’t letting that stop them.  At the very least they are hoping to create a new record.  One that will make franchise history and lead the American Hockey League.

Despite controlling most of the third period last night, a late penalty led the Checkers into overtime where they lost to the Aeros 3-2.  Despite a valiant run from Justin Peters, whose win streak came to an end last night in the loss, Dan Ellis is expected to be in the net for Charlotte tonight.  It will  be his first appearance since December 20, after he allowed 4 goals on 20 shots get by him against Peoria and Peters stepped in.  The last time these two teams met the game came down to a shootout decision with a final score of 1-0, it was only the second time the entire season that any game has been deadlocked at 0-0 and the only shutout loss for the Checkers.

Last night Charlotte played the majority of the game with only five defensemen as Rasmus Rissanen, who just came back, left the game with an injury in the first period and did not return.  It is unknown if he will be able to play in tonight’s game, but the Checkers have called on Tommi Kivisto,a rookie from ECHL Florida.  For the Everbaldes Kivisto has 13 points with 3 goals and 10 assists and sports a -5 in 30 games played this season.

Tonight’s game is at 8:00pm and can be heard on AHL Live for free or seen for a small fee.
