Greetings Caniacs! Are you ready for some Hockey? I sure am. As the 2012-13 hockey season quickly approaches the same cannot be said for the Collective Bargaining Agreement, which has created a standstill between the NHL and the NHLPA. As talks have still yet to resume between the two parties, that hasn’t affected some of the Hurricanes that have started to arrive in Raleigh to prepare for the upcoming season.
Raleigh Center Ice, which is the official practice facility for the Carolina Hurricanes (located on Hodges Street in Raleigh) has been the place to be if you are a hockey fan. From 10:30-11:50, Monday thru Friday, you can see many of the Hurricanes at their informal workouts. This has just recently started however. Prior to the workouts beginning Chad LaRose, Joe Corvo and Eric Staal have been casually participating in the adult pick-up sessions that RCI hosts daily throughout the week. I can tell you that from playing with them a couple of times this summer, they are as professional off the ice as they are on the ice. All three were great to play with and it was quite obvious that they truly love the game. For them, stealing the puck away from a 37 year old Caniac was as easy as taking candy from a kid.
With all the talk of a lockout it is nice to see our Canes still focusing on the upcoming season. A season that I believe will be a year of redemption. This team will no longer be the cellar dwellers’, an easy two points, a backup goalies game, a reason for coaches to tinker with their lines. The core is still there, however the Hurricanes have added the firepower they so desperately needed.
With the Canes starting to move back to their second home, the only question that is really left is ”Will they be locked out of their practice facility after the 15th of September, if there is to be an NHL lockout?”
