Canes in IIHF – Exhibition Wrap-Up

There are five Carolina Hurricanes playing for their countries during the IIHF World Championships. Cam Ward and Jeff Skinner (plus head coach Kirk Muller) are representing Canada, Justin Faulk and Patrick Dwyer are playing for Team USA and Jussi Jokinen is playing for Team Finland. Both Team USA and Team Canada played their last exhibition game of the tournament today before the full tournament begins on Friday. On Friday, USA plays France, Canada plays Slovakia and Finland plays Belarus. Today, however, Cam Ward started for Team Canada in their game against Switzerland and stopped 29 out of 31 shots to give Canada a 4-2 victory. Winger Jeff Skinner had 2 points with an assist on the first goal of the game by John Tavares and an empty net goal to seal the victory for the Canadians.

Team USA on the other hand had more of a challenge with a tougher opponent in the Swedes, but were able to come out with a 3-2 victory. Justin Faulk was a +1 during the game. Jussi Jokinen has played two games with Team Finland and has come up big in both games. In his first game, he assisted on the fifth and final goal for his team to give Finland a 5-0 victory against Belarus. Team Finland had 68 (!!!!) shots on goal for the game. The following day, both teams played again and while the shots were still extremely lop-sided (43-11 team Finland), the score was not. Finland won 2-1 in a shootout and I’ll give you one guess as to who the final shot was in the shootout? Yep. Jussi Jokinen.
