Carolina Hurricanes Draft Prospects

The Carolina Hurricanes posted on article on their website today about what to watch for in the off-season. One area of the post I found interesting was the 2012 NHL Draft and the prospects they predict to be available to the Canes. Last year, Carolina drafted Brody Sutter (C), Matt Mahalak (G), Gregory Hofmann (C), Keegan Lowe (D), Victor Rask (C), and Ryan Murphy (D).

This year’s draft will take place in Pittsburgh (if it is still standing after the playoffs) on June 22nd and 23rd. The Hurricanes have the 8th overall pick in this year’s draft. In today’s article, Canes noted Teuvo Teravainen, Radek Faksa, and Griffin Reinhart as possible picks. So let’s take a closer look at these players…

Teuvo Teravainen: This left winger is from Helsinki, Finland and was born September 11, 1994. According to EliteProspects.com, “A solid scorer with good playmaking and excellent on-ice vision. Has good hockey sense and puck-handling. Creative and calm with the puck, effective on the powerplay. Needs to improve his skating and gain strength to take on veteran opponents.” Although, I really enjoyed what the NHL had to say about him, “With an offensive skillset that borders on the obscene (in particular a rocket of a one-timer), he has first line potential.” Here’s the video to prove it. I particularly enjoyed the celebration that threw him off his skates. The guy has Chad LaRose spunk, I like it.

Radek Faksa: Born in Opava, Czech Republic, Faksa currently plays for the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL, “Projecting as a two-way power-forward, Faksa uses his solid skating and ample frame to protect the puck on the rush and win battles all over the ice,” states the NHL prospect review. In 62 games with Kitchener, he claimed an impressive 29 goals and 38 assists. I should also mention his frame since he comes in a 6’3”, 203 pounds. Did I happen to say he is a centerman?

Griffin Reinhart: A Canadian defenseman born January 24, 1994. The 6’4”, 198 pound player boasts 18 goals and 43 assists over 105 WHL games. He currently plays for the Edmonton Oil Kings and had 12 goals, 42 assists, and 38 penalty minutes in a span of 58 games. He also has a goal and two helpers in 8 playoff contests. The NHL had good things to say about Reinhart as well, “Because of his impressive combination of size, skating and skill, Griffin Reinhart is a safe bet to be one of the first defenseman called to the podium in June.

I guess we will have to wait until June to see what players the Canes truly snag. Personally, I am all for a big forward to protect Mr. Skinny. Until next time Caniacs…
