Recap: Canes Stunned By Blue Jackets In 5-1 Loss

Last night’s match between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Columbus Blue Jackets was seemingly a no brainer. The Canes, coming off arguably their best games of the season, with four straight wins, and finally a mostly healthy team. The Blue Jackets, with the worst record in the NHL, who had barely squeaked out one win in their previous six games. But Columbus showed the Hurricanes that in the NHL, you can’t sit back and coast in any game by prevailing 5-1.

The Canes looked tired and flat from the start and the Blue Jackets definitely took advantage. Vinny Prospal sounded the cannon for the first time of many Friday night. Carolina would have two Power Play opportunities in the first against the team with the worst penalty kill in the league, but would not capitalize.

This writer was hoping the Canes would get a stern talking to from Coach Kirk Muller during the first intermission and come back on the ice a different team. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case and RJ Umberger bested Cam Ward with a slap shot during a Blue Jackets Power Play. Drayson Bowman would save the Canes the embarrassment of a shutout by scoring the Canes only goal a few minutes later. Umberger would score two more goals, earning himself his third hat trick of his career.

The Canes threw everything but the kitchen sink at Jackets goalie Steve Mason in the third period, but could not get the puck in net. A 5-on-3 opportunity in the beginning of the third was squandered by the Canes. Mark Letestu would seal the deal for the Blue Jackets with the final goal.

Let’s look at the bright side:

-The Hurricanes out shot the Blue Jackets 40-26. That’s something right?

-Drayson Bowman continues to contribute positively to the team. Last night’s goal was his fourth point over the last four games.

-Jeff Skinner did not take a penalty nor did he get in a fight! A trend we can all be excited about.

Other than that Caniacs, I suggest we flush this game down the toilet and move on to Detroit tonight.

Let’s chat and thank our lucky stars none of our Canes want out of Carolina as bad as Rick Nash wants out of Columbus. Find us on Facebook at  CardiacCane or chat with us on Twitter:@CardiacCaneFS, @Esbee92, @peacelovepuck, @caniac176 and @CaniacCaz.
